With a shimmering cobalt-blue lid and a design seemingly inspired by Austin Powers, the Toshiba Satellite P25-S670 is a quadruple entertainment threat: movie theater, TV recorder, music player, and gaming machine. And with this system, beauty isn’t just skin deep. The 3.2-GHz P25 comes with a glossy, 17-inch widescreen that is so bright you can watch The Sopranos on it from across the room. Its built-in Harman/Kardon speakers are second only to those inside the HP zd7000, and the built-in TV tuner and Windows Media Center Edition software make it easy to operate from the couch. After a while, you’ll even forget you’re watching video on a laptop. The only problem is that the TV tuner occupies the same bay as the battery, so you can’t record your favorite shows while you recharge. Then again, with a battery life of 1 hour and 30 minutes with wireless on, you’re not buying this system for endurance. For gamers, the P25’s performance is excellent, rivaling the Dell Inspiron 9100. The system uses Nvidia’s awesome GeForce FX Go5700 graphics adapter with 128 MB of video RAM. The bountiful 5,400-rpm, 80GB hard drive doesn’t hurt either. The P25 also includes a load of convenient features. For one, its DVD burner handles not only DVD+RW discs like the other systems, but also DVD-RAM and DVD-RW discs, so you no longer have to worry about buying discs in the wrong format. To get top-quality video output, the Satellite P25-S670 also includes a unique set of component-video outputs. For fi ne-tuning the sound, there’s a software equalizer and enough amplifi cation to drive the speakers to distortion. Up front, there are play, stop, fast-forward, and rewind buttons for playing discs and a volume dial on left side. The Toshiba Satellite P25-S670 may be the perfect portable entertainment computer. And at this price, it’s a steal.
