11/17/04 - While HP is one of the largest manufacturers of computers, they surprisingly did not make any consumer thin and light notebooks for a number of years. The new Pavilion dv1040us breaks this trend.
Powering the HP Pavilion dv1040us is the Intel Pentium M 725 (1.6GHz) processors. This is a good CPU at balancing the power usage and the performance of the applications on the noteobook. The surprisingly element is that HP chose to use slower PC2100 DDR memory on the system. They do include 512MB of memory which should help offset some of delay, but this is one of the only thin and light notebooks not to use PC2700 DDR.
Storage on the dv1040us is good. While the system does come with a DVD burner, it is only compatible with the DVD+R standard that HP is a primary backer of. Internal storage is provided by a fairly standard 60GB hard drive. Storage is rounded out by a 6-in-1 media card reader that allows to system to read the most popular digital flash media types.
Graphics on dv1040us the use a slightly smaller 14" wide screen LCD panel. This makes it a bit smaller than most thin and light notebooks but not by much. HP uses the Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics on the dv1040us which is adequate for most general computing but lacks any 3D performance.
One other area that the HP Pavilion dv1040us is strong is the included software package. The bundled software should cover most of the applications a user might need.
