Notebooks considered as usual desk PC most often possess a line of observable defects, they are equipped by small displays and as a rule seldom please the user with extended functionality. In order to become a real alternative to modern desktops, the alike devices are required to be seriously revised by the approach to their designing and probably to donate transportability. Anyway, new portable PC by Dell turns out to be much closer to ideal DTR.

Comparatively high mass and cost

It's the best of DTR-systems seen by us, recommended to closest familiarization if you certainly do not upset by size and price.

The phrase "portable PC" is not used here accidentally - a new creation by Dell is hard to call really mobile. Though it's already an issue of the applicability borders of a given concept - by the main features it is a notebook, but very big. Exactly in this "very" lies in the main difference XPS M2010 from the rest what is presently accepted to call the DTR-class notebooks.

Dell has done that what had tried to realize before only Samsung. Having postponed the issues with the mass-size features on the back plan, the engineers of company created device capable under due approach to marketing to become the lawmaker of new class development principles - real DTR-systems without any clauses. Unlike Samsung M70, which has not been taken cordially on the market, Dell XPS M2010 has everything that it is necessary, and even more.

Seemingly, so simple decision - to forget about a mass and a size if they disturb to make a good DTR, was obvious. But a few people took a chance to go this way - all producers try to pack in a body of 17-inch models as much useful completing as possible. There were attempts to release something greater and aside from Samsung, for instance Nebesa One Mobile, equipped with two video adapters NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX, but it is impossible to call them mass, and these devices would look not as serial products, but sooner as certain concepts. Exactly this predetermined the fate to alike devices - they disappeared, not having appeared. Unfortunately, in both aforecited cases one more important constituent of a success was forgotten, which could change literally all - a design. Fortunately, Dell did not repeat this mistake.

To say that XPS M2010 is beautiful is to say practically nothing. It's amost ideal, moreover, both in work and in trasport mode. It hasn't unattaching monitor, as Samsung M70 has, but visually the display is separated from the body of system block, but construction of its pendant provides a broad range of regulation on height and stand, what allows quickly to expose the optimum corner practically in any case. The problem with close placement of the keyboard to screen have been solved in Dell simply and stylish - it is made lightweight (was applied the system of magnetic fixators, united with contacts of a charger). And besides a part "easy" here is completely justified, after all the keyboard can be disconnected with only one hand. There is one more particularity monitor pendant has - he also serves as a very suitable handle for device transfer - it is covered with skin and it is enough large for male hand. The upper lid is also made in a style of "skin" that will add XPS M2010 original glance, but in combination with classical colours (black with silver) an excellent ensemble can be obtained.

A suitable handle with a skin facing allows not to fear for the safety of device while carriage

Ergonomics is good - as a keyboard is placed in frontal part, then the main connectors are put along the sides. There are two cardreader slots (universal SD/MMC/MS/xD/SM and apart CF), ExpressCard slot and FireWire port on the left. On the right you can find the pair of USB-ports and slots for earphone and mike connection. All the rest, network and modem wall-plugs, DVI and S-Video outputs and also two USB-ports - are found on the backboard. In the same place a slot for block 7.1-channel audio output connection is located, there is also an optical and coaxial S/PDIF that is enough comfortable, after all it's enough to disconnect only one connector for turning off the whole system.

The issue with accomodation of the optical drive is solved originally - a drive with a fricative loading while pushing the button Eject raises in the middle part of body, moreover, mechanism itself is realized so qualitatively that it is a pleasure to use it.

The display will wholly satisfy the most of those, to whom it is not enough traditional for present DTR diagonal 17". IPS-matrix 20,1" with a resolution of 1680?1050 pleases with an excellent color transmitting, big range of the brightness regulation, good corners of review and not bad speed. Wholly suitable display both for work and for entertainment, not giving way to qualitative desk monitors of this producer.

The producers donated the block of the keys of cursor management for the sake of touchpad placement; notably reasonable and justified step

Input devices noticeably differ from accustomed in notebooks: a keyboard is a full analogue of desk by apportionment; the only exception is that instead of block of the cursor management keys a touchpad is used. There is also a separate Bluetooth-mouse with pleasing design in a kit of the supply. As a result there's no need in additional accessories aquisition, tha same to remote control, the keyboard with touchpad substitutes it with a success.

The equipment wholly corresponds to the rank "the most and the best" - a processor Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 (2,33 GHz), RAM 2 GB (possible installation of 2 GB more), two hard disks with a volume of 100 GB, full set of network interfaces and ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 videoaccelerator. Completing is also on the top - aside from BP, optical mouse, omnifarious adapters and not bad software, there's also a branded metallic small rug for mouse in stock, which looks like a manipulator itself.

Apart we'd note the acoustic system - in XPS M2010 are installed 8 (!) broadband speakers and small subwoofer with a phase invertor. In total, the user gets rather clean and good sound, which would be wholly enough for reproducing background music.

Dell XPS M2010 is a first portable PC, which is possible without clauses to call a full-fledged substitution to desk decisions. It has only one essential nuance, which does not allow to reckon for a wide promotion of alike decisions in our country - a high cost. However, this is not the most important at this moment. XPS M2010 is wholly capable to become the progenitor of the new desktops, more compact and suitable, than existing ones, and herewith in determined sort - mobile.

In principle, the only deficiency which is possible to attribute to this unique device is a considerable mass - 8,3 kg. But nevertheless those kilograms are quite "suitable" - due to an ingenious design of the handle it is enough simple to carry XPS M2010, additionally it is necessary to take into account that this is a weight of whole PC, but after all an average desk computer has a system block of approximately this weight.

However, if to look at this problem from the other sight, then a XPS M2010 buy can become an excellent reason to begin visiting the body builder saloon, after all for a real man this weight is an absolute trifle.
